Elgin Museum

.

Elgin Museum is Scotland's oldest continuously independent museum. Founded in 1836, the Museum is owned and managed by the membership organisation, The Moray Society, and is run almost entirely by volunteers.

The Museum's collections are housed in a Category A listed building at the east end of Elgin High Street, Moray, in the North East of Scotland. Here you can see objects from all over the world, with a special focus on Moray, and from all periods of history and prehistory from before the dinosaurs to the present day.

Please explore our website to find out more about the Museum: changing exhibitions, school visits, family events, outreach, lectures, resources for heritage and collections research, as well as how to hire our beautiful building as a venue for weddings and other special events.

Highlights of the permanent displays include our Recognised collection of local fossils, “People and Place: 1000 years of Moray's story, Pictish and early Medieval carved stones, other local archaeology and Treasure Trove.

Changing displays include works by local artists for sale, year by year memories of the First World War and new acquisitions. Look out for events and displays to celebrate the Year of History, Heritage, and Archaeology 2017 and our archaeology conference 4th/5th November 2017.

Admission to the Museum is free, but donations are most welcome. New members and volunteers are always needed to support the Museum's activities and the service it provides to the community.
